Truckers cause too many accidents. Of around 500,000 accidents a year nationwide involving truckers, about 5,000 are fatal accidents. Another statistic says that one in eight traffic fatalities involves truckers.
How many times have you been cut off, forcibly slowed down by a trucker in the left lane, or nearly been in an accident with a semi/tractor-trailer? Wouldn’t it be nice if they had their own highways like in Mexico (most truckers use the old and lengthier highways because they are free) or if they were forced into designated lanes?
Three of Texas’ most populous cities El Paso, Dallas and Houston are either setting up pilot programs or banning truckers in the left lane altogether. El Paso has banned truckers in the left lane. Houston has signs posted at certain points and so far the results in Dallas have been extremely positive, reducing the number of accidents, increasing travel time, and cutting down on pollution. Plans are underway to expand the pilot program in Dallas in 2010 to larger sections of interstate highways.
Austin too should implement laws against truckers in the left lane. Though it will not eradicate traffic, it will provide a safer driving environment.
