All members of society should be judged by the same standard, without exception. The pursuit or attainment of political stature, even as lawmaker, does not unbind the law. Should those in power transgress the laws they, if for no other reason that to show that the system work, should be brought to trial.
How someone would protect criminality in public officials is somewhat of a mystery especially while seemingly coming from a conservative perspective. The author appears to be writing to laypeople introducing or perhaps offering some insight to the ongoing lawsuits against former Attorney General John Ashcroft and former Justice Department official John Yoo. The ultimate argument is that making former officials liable is a bad thing because it will make hiring new top-level talent difficult. Huh?
Exposing crime, mismanagement, or neglect is a part of the government oversight process. Letting people slide, because of who they are sets an even worse precedent.
